Irrigation and the Environment

Irrigation and the environment are sometimes talked about as if they are at odds. The reality is more balanced. The history of irrigation in South Canterbury shows a growing understanding of how important it is to look after water and waterways while supporting productive farming.

As irrigation expanded, awareness increased around river health, water use, and environmental responsibility. Over time, this led to changes in how schemes operate, with more monitoring, better systems, and clearer expectations.

Environmental stewardship is a core part of how MGI operates. The scheme runs under an audited self-management system and places strong emphasis on responsible water use and supporting the health of the Waihao River and Wainono Lagoon.

Productive farms and healthy waterways go hand in hand, and MGI’s approach reflects a long-term commitment to both.
