The Morven Glenavy Ikawai has grown into one of New Zealand’s major farmer‑owned irrigation schemes, now supplying water to around 29,000 hectares using two Waitaki River intakes, a large canal network, ponds, and pressurised pipeline areas
Water for the Morven Glenavy Ikawai Irrigation Scheme is taken from the Waitaki River at two intakes: Stonewall and Bells Pond, which operate together as one integrated system.
The Stonewall intake supplies the Ikawai and Redcliffs area. The Bells Pond intake is the main supply for the Morven–Glenavy scheme. Water is diverted from the Waitaki into an intake race that feeds Bells Pond, a large off‑river storage pond. Bells Pond acts as a buffer, allowing river fluctuations to be managed and enabling a steady, controlled release of water into the scheme.
MGI adopted its Environmental Management Strategy in 2010 and was an early leader in Farm Environment Plans. All scheme farms must hold an independently audited FEP, embedded through Water User Agreements, forming the foundation for ongoing environmental improvement across 165 properties.
