Process for New Irrigation

If you are planning new irrigation within the MGI Command Area or the Waihao Downs Irrigation Scheme, the steps below explain what is required from initial design through to commissioning.

  • Step 1: Design

    New shareholders must first apply for MGI shares.

    Engage a qualified irrigation design company to prepare an irrigation system design.

    Advise MGI of your intention to convert to spray irrigation.

    Consult with MGI Operations to confirm the most suitable location to take water from the scheme.

  • Step 2: Design Review and Approval

    Before construction begins, submit your Irrigation Design Plans to MGI for review and approval using the MGI design approval template.

    ‍Update your Farm Environment Plan.

    If this is a new farm, submit the Design Plans to MGI as part of the approval process.

  • Step 3: Acknowledgement

    Acknowledgement of the design by MGI.

    Approval of Farm Environmental Plan by MGI.

  • Step 4: Construction

    Construct the irrigation system in accordance with the approved design.

    Arrange installation of the water meter telemetry system by Kirk Irrigation Ltd.
    (This cost is covered by MGI.)

  • Step 5: Commissioning

    Complete a commissioning report and submit it to MGI once construction is finished.

    The commissioning report confirms that the system complies with the approved design and the relevant Codes of Practice. It also notifies MGI that the irrigation system is complete so water supply settings can be confirmed.

    If any changes were made during construction to water use, application rate, or irrigated area, MGI must be provided with:
    • As-built drawings
    • Updated design information

    Any issues identified must be addressed before water supply is guaranteed.

Notes:

  1. All designs must comply with the Code of Practice for the Design of Piped Irrigation Systems in New Zealand.

  2. Designs must also meet the Design Standard for Piped Irrigation Systems in New Zealand.

  3. An ECAN-compliant pulse output meter must be installed at the point of abstraction to measure water flow rate and volume. The standard requirement is one meter per abstraction from the MGI scheme.

  4. MGI will arrange for a telemetry of the flow meter data
